Writing Workshop #01: How to Write the Introduction

The introduction is arguably the most critical part of any research paper. It sets the stage, identifies the research gap, and convinces journal editors and reviewers to keep reading. Designed specifically with postgraduate and doctoral students in mind, this workshop provides clear, simple instructions and hands-on experience to help you refine your academic writing and prepare your manuscripts for publication.

Workshop Structure

This intensive 3-hour workshop is highly interactive, moving beyond theory to ensure you leave with practical skills. The session is divided into three focused segments:

  • Hour 1: Lecture & Clear Instructions – Learn the essential components of a strong introduction, including how to establish your territory, identify the niche, and occupy the gap.
  • Hour 2: Hands-on Practice – Apply what you have learned immediately by drafting or refining your own introduction sections.
  • Hour 3: Peer Reviewing – Engage in collaborative peer feedback, a crucial skill for any early-career researcher, to strengthen your writing through constructive critique.
